Five For Friday January 30, 2015

Time for Five for Friday with Doodle Bugs Teaching!

This week started with a weekend birthday celebration for my youngest son, Luke.  He turned 9!!!  Where does the time go?  We started the celebration at school with a little cake.

The his friend spent the night and the next morning we hit the mall and his favorite restaurant, Dave & Busters.

One of the things he bought were these magnetic earrings (the only way mom would you allow him to have any earrings!).

He loves jumping at the mall on these trampoline harness things!  What a daredevil!

And in case you were wondering, those bottles are rootbeer!

We practiced some fractions during small groups.  We worked on the idea that when the numerator and denominator are the same or equal, the fraction is equal to 1 whole.

Because I taught 7th grade math before switching to Elementary, I know that students are often afraid of big numbers because they are big.  I don't want my students to be intimidated later on down the road, so we often use big numbers to show that the rule is still the same.

And while we are at it, why not throw in a few variables to make things interesting?

She was so proud to be doing algebra! No math anxieties here!

We started a new read aloud this week - The One and Only Ivan.  I absolutely LOVE this book and so do the students!

In science we modeled layers of earth caused by erosion by mixing different types of soil in water and letting them settle.

The most exciting part of our week was the fact that we were published!  I decided this year to try out Student Treasures for one of our writing units.  The students chose our Fairy Tales unit to publish as a class book.  The books arrived this week and I couldn't have been more pleased with them!  They were very high quality and the students are so proud!

How was your week?

Five For Friday December 19, 2014

There is something about that last Friday before Christmas Vacation!  A little crazy and a little relaxing all at once!  Now that I am officially on Christmas Break, it is time for a little Five for Friday!

Every year my hubby dresses up as Santa.  This year he made a special appearance at our movie night.

And a close-up with our three youngest boys.

We started the week a little crazy as we broke out the glitter to make our annual Christmas Card.  It has become one of my favorite traditions, but the glitter mess - ugh!  There was glitter EVERYWHERE this year.

After the glitter dried, we took a few (hundred) shots to capture our holiday image.  It takes many, many takes to get 20 something kids looking acceptable.  Here are a few of our outtakes.

And our final Christmas Card.

We also made Christmas Cards to trade with another third grade class.

We had a ton of fun learning about windmills this week.  We worked with a 4th grade class and learned a lot not only about engineering, but also about teamwork and collaboration.  I will be posting more about this later, but here is a sneak peek.

Finally, I have a little favor to ask of you...  Our school guidance counselor has written 2 children's books about a crazy space cat and his reluctant owner, Bob. They are really fun books that my class loves to read.  Unfortunately, Ryan's son, Brody was diagnosed with Juvenile Diabetes last year when he was in Kindergarten.  Right now until December 31st, the kindle versions of both books are only 99 cents and he is donating all of the profits to help the NV Diabetes Association.

I would really appreciate it if you would consider adding these books to your Kindle library!

Here is a note from Ryan -

"My son Brody was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes last February, and to support him and NV Diabetes Association, both my “The Adventures of Bob” kindles are 99cents until December 31st. All my profits are going to NV Diabetes Association to help support their family activities and family camps. Any soft cover sales will also be donated.

Appreciate your help :)"

Five for Friday November 7th 2014 GIVEAWAY TIME TOO!

Five for Friday is a weekly teacher linky party hosted by Doodle Bugs Teaching where you post five random things from the week on your blog.  Them you link up at her page and check out what everyone else is up to as well.  I always love this linky party because I get great ideas from all of the participating bloggers! You can find the latest linky party here.

Don't know how to join a linky party?  Check out my post here.

Since Halloween was Nevada Day, we had a three day weekend! Woo Hoo!  I got to spend the day with my kiddos and one of my students (his mom had to work and he is buddies with Luke, so he spent the day with us).  We had a fun-filled day!

We started at Build a Bear where Luke got Olaf and a new bear (I of course forgot to take a pic of him - grrr!).  My student got Toothless from How to Train Your Dragon. I DID remember to take his picture since I was texting his mom with them throughout the day.

Next up was the movie theater where we saw Alexander and The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day.  If you haven't seen it yet - you must!  It was so funny!  Even my hubby loved it!

Finally, we ended the day with a ride on the Ferris Wheel at Scheel's (a sporting goods store).

We had a half day professional development class, so I had to have a sub this week.  One of the activities that I left was this Pumpkin Pie Pronouns Roam the Room from Teacher's Clubhouse

The sub said it was by far the best activity she had ever seen in sub plans.  The students loved it, were engaged, and learned more about pronouns.  What's not to love?  Note to self - Include more roam the room activities in my sub plans!

Because my PD was in the afternoon, I actually posted these around the room while my students were taking an assessment.  They were so curious about them, I knew they would be engaged for the sub.

We have been working on elapsed time this week using t-charts.  T-charts have been the BEST way to teach elapsed time.  I explained more in this post here.

Recognize Toothless? LOL!

My students and I were very happy to receive our newest Amazon order. I MAY be a bit addicted to Amazon - just saying.

The Book With No Pictures is HILARIOUS!  It was another hit with the sub.  The Stink books are quite the hit in 3rd grade right now, not just in my class but the others as well.  I have a few students from other classes who come down to borrow them.  We are currently working on a fairy tale unit, so a few of the books were for that, and the new Ivan book was a must have since we will be reading The One and Only Ivan later in the year.

I am honestly so thankful for all of my followers, and I really LOVE being able to do this $25 Teachers Pay Teachers Gift Card Giveaway each month.  Use the Rafflecoptor below to enter to win this month's prize.
