Mental Math

Do your students need to build mental math skills, including rounding, estimating and fact fluency?

This post contains affiliate links. I earn a small commission each time someone makes a purchase using one of my links, which helps to support the blog.  All opinions are my own and I only promote brands and products that I have used myself and truly love.

I am constantly on the lookout for ways to increase my students computational fluency, and with many of my students, the more hands on, the better.  I created these mental math cards to help my students practice their listening, problem solving, and computational skills.  We have been using them everyday this week and they are fast becoming a class favorite!

I printed out digit cards (0-9) for each of my students, and then put them to work cutting.  At the beginning of my teaching career I did a lot more cutting and getting supplies ready in advance.  Now, I put them to work.  As an extra bonus, it gives them something to do as I pass out supplies.

The students then set out their digits across their desk.  They each seemed to pick their own system.

Then, I started reading the clues.

And, I am not going to lie, many of them were confused!  So, I broke out plan B and had them come to the carpet for a quick demo.  If you decide to do this with your class, I would suggest using the demo first.  Just a little tip!

I just did a quick demo with scotch tape on some digit cards on my easel.  You could easily do this on an overhead as well, but... I was having tech issues that day... so quick and easy was my route.

I read from this card and modeled each step.

The light bulbs went off and my students were ready to tackle it again!

They are loving it!  They ask to play this instead of some of our other math games during centers.  They even asked to use them during Fun Friday!  Some of the students are writing their own prompts now!

You can write your own prompts for your students to use, or you can buy my cards which feature 100 ready made prompts as well as editable cards. I have included digit cards and complete instructions as well.

Word Walls For Upper Elementary

I am linking up with Schroeder Shenanigans in 2nd and Lucky Little Learners for this month's #2getherwearebetter.  Today we are talking all things bulletin boards.

Now, if keeping bulletin boards fresh and exciting doesn't come easy to you - don't worry - you are not alone!  I am not a fan of constantly changing my bulletin boards, but, I don't want to keep the same thing up all year long either.  So, here are a few of my tips for making life easier on you when it comes to bulleting boards.

Set-Up - When you start the beginning of the year, get your boards ready with a background that you can use all year long. I suggest using fabric or better yet, sheets from Wal-Mart.  I used the Wal-Mart sheets and it was under $5.  The first time I put them up, I ironed them, but this year, I left them up at the end of the school year, and I am leaving them as is.  Because really, who has time for that at the beginning of the year?!?

I also like to layer two different types of borders to give it some extra oomph.  I have also used ribbons and scrunched up tissue paper as borders.

Make Your Bulletin Boards Useful & Interactive- I like to have at least one bulletin board that we add pieces to throughout the year.  Above is a picture of my BIG KIDS word wall, which focuses on prefixes, suffixes, vocabulary, spelling rules, and root words.  Right up my 4th graders alley.

I will start the year with just the headings up, and we will add each piece as we learn it.

Calendar Walls and Daily 5/CRAFT/CAFE walls are also some other ideas of bulletin boards you can add to.

Anchor Charts- The other way that I like to change out my bulletin boards is by hanging anchor charts to them.

You can see a few of our Writer's Workshop anchor charts on the wall behind this lovely birthday girl.

Before you go, head on over to our giveaway page to enter our current giveaway!  Every week one lucky winner gets a $25 Teachers pay Teachers gift card!

I hope you have garnered a few ideas for keeping it simple when it comes to bulletin boards.  If you have any other great ideas, please share in the comments below!  Then head on over to read some of the other great ideas from other bloggers here.

TpT Seller Challenge - Make Your Masterpiece - & $25 TpT Gift Card Giveaway!

This is the third week of the Seller Challenge hosted by Third in HollywoodSparkling in SecondPeppy Zesty Teacherista, and Teach Create Motivate. This week is all about CREATING.

This challenge came at the perfect time because I have been working on a project since about April, and I just couldn't seem to get it done!  This gave me the extra push to finish it, which was especially good because I will need it in the fall when I roll up to 4th grade.

I absolutely LOVE using my Third Grade Daily Math Review,

I would have to say that this has routine has probably had the biggest impact on my math instruction by far.  I love the fact that I am able to review math skills throughout the year, and that my students who struggle get repeated exposure to the material and can actually learn and retain it!  I definitely wanted to continue that with my kiddos in 4th grade as well.

You can download the preview which features two free weeks to see if the program will work for you.

TpT Seller Challenge Week 1 - Makeover Madness

I am participating in the TpT Seller Challenge with oh just about 1,000 of my closest blogging friends. Seriously, the participation has been amazing!  Anyway, our first challenge is to give one or more of our products some makeover love.  I have been selling on TpT since 2007, so some of my first products are looking outdated and in need of some attention!

I have chosen two to highlight today:

One of my first products, my Capitalization Rules Packet is a great seller, but it was looking a bit scary...

You can find the new and improved version here, and it is on sale for the rest of the week!

The next product is another oldie.

You can find this new and improved Relating Multiplication to Division Game at my store for the bargain price of $1!

What do you think of my changes?

If you are also a seller participating in this challenge - please leave a link to your post in the comments so I can check yours out as well!
