Mr. Sketch Markers are my absolute favorite for making anchor charts and working with small groups!  I love the bright colors that rarely fade - and the fact that they smell good doesn't hurt either.  My students also love when I use them to grade their papers!  I buy them on Amazon using Subscribe and Save to save money!

Flair pens are another  one of my favorite markers.  I love to use them for grading and I also let students use them to revise their writing.

I do not know how I would live without my laminators.  Yes, that is plural! I have one at home and one at school and it is so convenient!

Even though I love my laminators, there are times when I need something quick and easy.  I love these dry erase pockets for being able to quickly re-use worksheets.  My students get extra practice, and I save time at the copier.

And speaking of dry erase, these are the absolute best dry erase markers out there!  My school buys a cheaper version, so I always stock up on my own, because they last so much longer! Again, I buy these on Amazon using Subscribe and Save.

Something about color makes everything better!  From boring worksheets to letters home, Astrobrights paper makes everything a little more fun!

Just like I don't like to compromise on my dry erase markers, I also don't like to compromise on the pencils we use in class.  Ticonderoga pencils are by far the best.  They sharpen so much easier than any of the others and they hold a point longer.

Mother's Day Coupons

How to Celebrate Mother's Day For A Child With No Mom

I purposely didn't include the word "Mom" or "Mother's Day" so that students who don't live with their Mom can gift them to any other female caregiver.  The set also includes coupons for male caregivers as well depending on your students' needs.

Each coupon is filled with special chores that the students can complete as a special treat.  There are also blank coupons so that students may write in their own special gift options.  The students can put together their own Mother's Day coupon books with the coupons of their choice.

How to Make A Coupon Book for Mom

Download and print these Mother's Day Coupons.  I like to print them on cardstock to make them a little sturdier, but, you can also copy them on regular copy paper.

Don't forget about Dad! This coupon book also includes coupon pages for male caregivers as well!  If your students aren't in school in June, you can have them make Father's Day coupons ahead of time.

Cinco De Mayo Subitizing Color By Number Worksheets

A key mathematical skill kindergarteners must work towards is building number sense. This skill is critical in helping students to build a solid math foundation so that they can learn more complex concepts. One of the areas of number sense that is important to focus on is subitizing.

What is Subitizing?

Subitizing is when a student is able to instantly see "how many" without needing to count each one individually when numbers are represented by objects such as dots, tally marks, ten frames, or fingers being held up. 

We subitize with dice where we can just look at the dice and we instantly know the number it represents without having to count each dot individually. 

How Can Students Practice Subitizing?

There are many ways for students to practice subitizing including using dice, or dominoes. I also have a fun Cinco de Mayo subitizing color by number worksheet set that is perfect for using in May to practice those subitizing skills!

When having young students complete these color by number worksheets, I often have the students color the crayons at the top of the page as a key so that they can see at a glance which color goes with each number.

In this subitizing practice, students should be able to look at the pictures and determine the number it represents. However, students who are still practicing this skill can count any numbers they don't immediately recognize.

When Can I Use These Cinco de Mayo Subitizing Color By Number Worksheets?

If you are using these color by number sheets in the classroom, you can use them as a math center, extra practice with a small group, sent home as extra practice, or even as a whole group activity!

Earth Day Read Alouds

This Class Can Save the Planet

This book shows kids how they can have a BIG impact on protecting the Earth by working together. I really love that this big gives kids real actionable ideas to do more to save the Earth such as using both sides of a paper, recycling paper, packing their lunches with reusable products, composting, and so much more.  

Teaching Ideas:

Themes: Caring for the Earth

Grammar:

Nouns - Your students can identify a variety of nouns including: class, students, classroom, planet, oceans, rivers, mountains, beaches, parks, lands, schools, and communities.

Verbs - Challenge your students to write sentences with some of the verbs in the book including: believe, recycle, choose, tossing, compost, donate, and invent.

Writing: This book is written in the format of a persuasive letter and would be a great mentor text for a persuasive writing unit.

Zonia's Rain Forest

This book was written by one of my favorite children's authors, Juana Martinez-Neal who also wrote the book Alma and How She Got Her Name.

In the book, Zonia and her family live in the Peruvian Amazon where it is always green and full of life.  They are members of the Asháninka which is the largest Indigenous group of that area.  Zonia notices a deforested area in her beloved rainforest and she pledges to act to protect her home.

Teaching Ideas:

Themes: Caring for the Earth

Research: The back of the book provides students with additional information about the Asháninka people, the Amazon, animals that live in that area, and Threats to the Amazon.

Any of these topics would lead to great research opportunities!

Penguins Don't Wear Sweaters

Penguins Don't Wear Sweaters Do They?  This story tells about well-meaning humans who knit sweaters for penguins to wear after an oil spill near their home. Unfortunately, those sweaters did more harm than good, so this book drives home the importance of protecting our Earth for the animals who live in it.

Teaching Ideas:

Spelling: This book is filled with verbs ending in -ing that would be perfect if you are working on spelling words with that ending.  Some examples include: gliding, cuddling, huddling, and waddling.

Science/STEAM: Have students conduct an oil spill clean-up lab demonstration.  You can find instructions here.

Thank You Earth: A Love Letter to Our Planet

This book has some of the most incredible photographs and beautiful poetic words as the author pens a thank you letter to our Earth for all of the beautiful parts of it. A thank you for all the Earth provides: shelter, food, oxygen, and more.

Teaching Ideas:

Writing: The author provides an author's note at the end of the book where she suggests that students write their own thank you notes to the Earth.  You could have students write these, or thank you notes to other things in the environment.

If students have access to cameras, phones, or iPads, you might have them take photos during a photo walk to go with their thank you notes.
