Are you looking for an alternative to hands-on manipulatives? This growing list of online math manipulatives is a great way to provide "hands-on" math practice both in the classroom and remotely! I am a big believer in using manipulatives during math class! When we first were told we would have to teach on-line, I was devastated trying to think of how to teach math without manipulatives. Fortunately, I was reminded of some free online math manipulatives that students can use on tablets or computers to help them solve math problems. In case you have been looking for some virtual versions of your favorite math tools, I have a growing list of the ones I have found so far.
1. The Math Learning Center This is probably the resource I use the most. They have clocks, number frames, number lines, fractions, geo-boards, base ten blocks, money, and pattern shapes. I like that students can share their work with you as well as being able to share it on your screen during Zoom lessons or whole class lessons using a Smart Board. They have versions for both computers and iPads. 2. MathsBot.Com
This site features even more manipulatives including: algebra disks and tiles, bar modeling, place value counters, dice, dominoes, fraction walls, cuisenaire rods, and more.
The site has some other great features such as a question generator, printables, and puzzles. 3. Illuminations
This site has many of the same types of manipulatives as the other two, but, one thing I really love about it is the dynamic paper. You can create the things you need to show using the tool (such as graph paper, number lines, and pattern blocks), and then can export it as a pdf or jpg to use with your students off-line as well.
One thing I really like about this site is that you can easily mix and match a variety of manipulatives. You can see in the picture below how you could show that 1/4 of 8 = 2.
This site has a ton of the usual virtual manipulatives, but some things that make it unique are it's inclusion of letter tiles, a classroom timer, a stop watch, an area and perimeter explorer, number charts, Elkonin boxes, and a thermometer.
Some different manipulatives at this site include a balance and spinners. I also like that this site has some free activities for using the manipulatives.
One thing I really like about this site is the ability to sort the manipulatives by grade level and content area.
In addition to the manipulatives there are some math games and puzzles as well.
8. Phoenix College Mathematics Blog My favorite feature of these virtual manipulatives is the paper folding for fraction addition and subtractions. I also would have loved the integer chips operations when I taught 7th grade math!
9. BrainingCamp This site has a large variety of virtual math manipulatives, but one of my favorite things is that they were designed to look like the physical manipulatives that you would use in class. You can easily switch back and forth during whole group and small group instruction. The only negative with this site is that it is a paid subscription, but it would be well worth it if you have PTA or school funds to buy it!
I also love the connection they make with the fraction circles and clocks!
10. Math Manipulatives Room
This is a Google slide made by Teaching With Neons that you can easily share with your students in Google classroom. All manipulatives are linked to online platforms where students are able to manipulate the items. They can take screen shots to share their work with you!

Are you looking for classroom games to play on Zoom with your students? Just like in the classroom, my students LOVE to play games on Zoom. Here is a list of ten fun games that you can play with your students during your next Zoom or Google Hangouts lesson!

What Games Can I Play With My Students On Zoom?
1. Guess the Sound
This game has been a great way to either begin or end my Zoom lessons. I simply play the video, then pause it right after the sound is played. The students send me their guesses in chat, and then I press play again to see if they are correct. They love it, and luckily he has several videos like this to choose from! 2. Guess the State
I have always done Mystery Skype activities with my students where we met up with another classroom, and we had to guess the state they lived in before they guessed the state we were from. Because of the current situation, we weren't able to do that, BUT, I was able to adapt the game to our Zoom classroom lessons.
The students each had a copy of this map, which I had also uploaded to my PowerPoint lesson. They could ask me yes or no questions in order to guess the mystery state I had chosen. Some sample questions might be:
Is this state bordered by water?
Does this state start with the letter M?
Is this state in the South?
They marked x's on the states that did not fit the criteria based on my answers. They tried to guess using less questions than the day before.
3. Boggle
Boggle is another game that easily translates from the classroom to the Zoom environment. Students can write their answers on paper, send them in chat, or call them out as they see new words.
4. Mental Math
My students always BEG to play this game in the classroom, so I knew I had to play it on Zoom as well. I gave the students printable tiles so they can play at home as I read the clues. I do not show them the cards just like I don't show them in class. You can find my mental math tiles to play on Zoom with Students here.
5. Hangman
You can create your own Hangman games here and share your screen on Zoom to play them with your class. You can use them to review vocabulary or spelling words, or simply to share a fun message with your class! 6. Bingo
Have your student use the whiteboard feature on Zoom to draw pictures for their classmates to guess what they are. You can use vocabulary words as the clues. Just as much fun as the Pictionary board game! 9. Scavenger Hunt
Send your students on a scavenger hunt to see who can find the most items on your list. You can make it academic by asking them to find things that relate to your content standards. For example, I teach 4th grade, so I might ask them to find examples of right angles, or arrays.
10. How Well Do You Know Your Teacher?
When I saw this post on Betsey Jenning's Instagram, I thought it would make the perfect end of the year game! Make a PowerPoint with questions about yourself to see how well your students know you!
