St. Patrick's Day Activities for the Classroom

With the name Kelly Malloy, you can probably tell that I have a wee bit of Irish in me (well, about 50% to be exact according to my DNA test).  But, whether you're Irish or not, bringing St. Patrick's Day activities into the classroom can be so much fun!

Here are a few St. Patrick's Day Activities for the classroom:

No Pinching

I work super hard all year to build a classroom community, so when I give my students the NO Pinching rule, they are usually pretty good about following it.  Unfortunately, kids on the playground aren't always as good about following the rule.

To avoid pinching, I get St. Patrick's Day necklaces for each of my students like these ones. This way they are all wearing green!

Read Alouds

One of the best ways to incorporate the holiday theme into the day is with a St. Patrick's Day read aloud.  Here are some of my favorite read alouds for St. Patrick's day:

Fiona's Luck tells the story of an Irish girl named Fiona who outsmarts a greedy Leprechaun King who has taken all of the good fortune of the Irish people.  I love that the main character is super smart and uses this gift to bring back luck to the Irish people.  This is a great one for teaching about character traits!

How to Catch a Leprechaun is a fun rhyming tale written in the point of view of a leprechaun.  It's great for introducing point of view!  Students will love trying to find the leprechaun on each page and trying to predict what the leprechaun will do next!

You can add to the fun by having a "leprechaun" wreak havoc in your classroom.  The best part?  You can go as all out or as little out as you like!

I personally don't love cleaning up a mess, so I do little things like printing our work on green paper, or leaving a sprinkling of shamrocks around the room.

Have your students write a how to essay about how to build a leprechaun trap.  Have them build one as a fun STEM project.

Color By Number

To celebrate St. Patrick's Day in my classroom, I like to give my students fun, no-prep St. Patrick's Day math worksheets like these color by number sheets where they can practice skills such as addition, and multiplication,  while coloring fun St. Patrick's Day themed coloring pictures!

St. Patrick's Day Word Search

Word Search activities are great for building spelling, vocabulary skills, and so much more!

St. Patrick's Day Door Decorations

Give your students a shout-out for St. Patrick's Day! This freebie is a great way to give your class shout-outs during the weeks leading up to St. Patrick’s Day. Simply print out the template on colored paper and write down the shout-outs you want to give your class. I posted one new shamrock each day and my students raced to read each new one.

This activity is featured in my blog post Shamrock Shout- out. Head on over if you want to see more about how I used it in my classroom.

Free Printable: Key Ring Math Facts Flashcards

Math Facts have been an important part of any student's math education.  After teaching seventh grade math and fourth grade math and seeing students struggle with more advanced concepts because they are not able to recall a math fact, I am completely convinced that being able to solve math facts is vital to success in upper math.

Because of this, I work tirelessly to make sure that my students can solve 6 X 8 as effortlessly as they take a breath!

One of the ways that I have my students practice math facts is through the use of flash cards.

I put the flashcards in order this way:

Known fact
Known fact
Unknown fact
Known fact
Unknown fact
Known fact
Unknown fact
Known fact

This helps the students to feel successful on the majority of the cards.  I based the amount of new math facts on research that found that third and fourth graders can retain 3 to 4 new pieces of information at a time.  If your students are younger, you may want to reduce the number of unknown facts at a time.

Key Ring Math Facts Flashcards An Apple for the Teacher

As we go through the pile of cards, I put tally marks on each card that the student answers correctly.  Once a card has 5 tally marks, they become a known fact.  When the card has 10 tally marks, the student gets to take the card home because they "own" it!  They love taking cards home and they even continue to practice at home.

When the students practice, I have them say the whole fact out loud, not just the answer.  So they would say "Four times three equals twelve."

If they miss one, I have them say it correctly, then skip back three facts and repeat them again.  This way they have additional practice with the facts they are missing.

I use a set of cards from my Kicking it Math Facts program which is available in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division depending on your students' needs.

You can also get a copy of the flashcards only as a freebie!  This free set includes facts up to ten, but the full resources include facts up to twelve.

I print the cards out on heavy cardstock front to back and them cut them out.  I like to laminate them to make them even more sturdy, but you don't have to.  You can even just print them out on regular copy paper.

I punch a hole in the side and put them on a binder ring so that they all stay together.  Students can even hook them onto their binders so they don't lose them.

Do you use flash cards?  If so, how?

Things We Love Giveaway Feb. 14, 2021

This Giveaway is Over!  Please visit our Giveaway page to enter our current giveaway.   Sign up HERE to be alerted about all of our future giveaways!

We had such a blast sharing the things we love last year in honor of Valentine's Day, so we decided to do it again!

Some of my blogging buddies and I have gotten together to give away teaching supplies that we LOVE!

Check out all of our favorites and scroll down to enter to win ALL of them!

This post contains affiliate links. I earn a small commission each time someone makes a purchase using one of my links, which helps to support the blog.  All opinions are my own and I only promote brands and products that I have used myself and truly love.

Mr. Sketch Markers are my absolute favorite for making anchor charts!  I love the bright colors - and the fact that they smell good doesn't hurt either.  My students also love when I use them to grade their papers!  I buy them on Amazon using Subscribe and Save to save money!

Flair pens are another favorite of mine for grading purposes.  I let students use them to revise their writing as well, because they love writing with them, so they always want to add details!

I do not know how I would live without my laminators.  Yes, that is plural! I have one at home and one at school and it is so convenient!

Even though I love my laminators, there are times when I need something quick and easy.  I love these dry erase pockets for being able to quickly re-use worksheets.  My students get extra practice, and I save time at the copier.

And speaking of dry erase, these are the absolute best dry erase markers out there!  My school buys a cheaper version, so I always stock up on my own, because they last so much longer! Again, I buy these on Amazon using Subscribe and Save.

Something about color makes everything better!  From boring worksheets to letters home, Astrobrights paper makes everything a little more fun!

Just like I don't like to compromise on my dry erase markers, I also don't like to compromise on the pencils we use in class.  Ticonderoga pencils are by far the best.  They sharpen so much easier than any of the others and they hold a point longer.

And last but not least, no teacher favorites list would be complete without Teachers pay Teachers! If you win this giveaway, you will also receive a $50 TpT gift card to spend however you like!

So, onto the giveaway...

GIVEAWAY DETAILS:

Prize: Things We LOVE prize pack including: Mr. Sketch Markers, Flair Markers, Personal Laminator, Dry Erase Pockets, Dry Erase Markers, Astrobrights Paper, Ticonderoga Pencils, and a $50 Teachers pay Teachers gift card.
