Sadie Sprocket Builds a Rocket is about a little girl who sets her sights on going to Mars. No one has been there before, so she makes it her mission to be the first one.
I absolutely LOVE the poetry and rhyme woven throughout the text. I also love how it gives an example of a child having a passion and what they do to achieve it!
There are also a ton of vivid verbs and great vocabulary! I also appreciate that the author has included information about the history of women in space for those students interested in learning more.
Gerta is another book from Amazon's First Read program. Amazon Prime members can get the book for Free!
This is one of those books that I recommend for you! It takes place in 1945 post World War II. I am a sucker for historical fiction, and this is a good one so far!
It's about a woman who is the daughter of a Czech mother and a German father who who was aligned with Hitler during the war. Because of her father's role in the war, Greta has been named an enemy of the state and has been expelled (along with many others) from Czechoslovakia.
She is forced to leave the only home that she knows with only the clothes on her back and her baby daughter.
I haven't finished this one yet, but it has been great so far!
No David! Is always a classroom favorite no matter how old my students are! I love using it as a read aloud at the beginning of the year to talk about the right and wrong ways to do things. It is also a great writing mentor text since there aren't a lot of words on the pages. Students can create their own.
Every year I have at least one boy in my class who is a sports fan, and they fall in love with the Tim Green books about sports! Football Genius is about a boy who can predict football plays before they even happen. You can get a great deal on the Kindle version right now!
