What is Subitizing?
Subitizing is the ability to instantly recognize the number of objects without counting. You probably have used this skill without knowing what it was called every time you play a board game that involves rolling dice. You instantly "know" how many dots are on the dice.
According to the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, one key part of effective subitizing is developing pattern recognition.
