How Self Grading Math Facts Tests Can Save You Time

Are you tired of grading your math fact tests by hand?  I was too!  I have a solution for you!  Self-grading Google Forms tests can save you so much time!

How Self Grading Math Facts Tests Can Save You Time

If you have ever taught upper elementary math, you understand just how crucial math fact fluency is!  Having those math facts memorized makes it so much easier for students to master more challenging math standards including place value, division, fractions, area and perimeter, and so much more!

Speaking of math standards, math fact fluency is right in there!

Common Core Standard 1.OA.C.6 states that students should demonstrate fluency for addition and subtraction within 10.

Common Core Standard 2.OA.B.2 states that students should be able to "fluently add and subtract within 20" and "By end of Grade 2, know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers.

Common Core Standard 3.OA.C.7 tells us that "By the end of Grade 3, (students will) know from memory all products of two one-digit numbers."

The best way that I have been able to get my students to master their math facts is with my Kicking It Math Fact Fluency program!

Kicking It Math Fact Fluency Program

But, while I love the program, I must admit that I don't always love grading the fact fluency tests!  Sure, I have come up with ways to make grading these tests easier, but I still don't love it!

Kicking it Math Multiplication Worksheet

There had to be a better way!

Google Forms to the rescue!

Now, your entire class can take a math fact test on an Ipad, laptop, or desktop computer.  They submit their answers and immediately receive their score an can see which facts they need to practice.  You get a spreadsheet with each of their grades to let you know what facts they have mastered, and what facts they still need to work on.

Benefits of Using Google Forms to Assess Students' Math Fact Fluency

Goggle Forms are Self Grading

This may very well be the best advantage of digital math fact tests.  I have saved so many hours of time correcting math facts!

Google Forms Give Immediate Feedback

Try as I might to give students' their math fact tests back by the end of the day, it didn't always happen.  With Google Forms, students get immediate feedback. When students can see right away which math facts they missed, the feedback is so much more relevant!

Google Forms Are Paperless

Not only do you save time grading math fact tests, but you save time at the copier copying them!  No more running out at the last moment!

Google Forms Are Easy to Analyze

The results of your students quizzes can easily be converted to a spreadsheet so you can see how your students are progressing at a glance.

Self Grading Math Facts Tests

Are you tired of grading your math facts by hand?

You can make your own tests using Google Forms - create a quiz and use the answer key feature. But... that can be time consuming too!

Don't worry! I have you covered!  I have created sets of Digital Self-Grading Math Facts Sets that go along with my Kicking It Math resource!

St. Patrick's Day Subitizing Color by Number

Building number sense in kindergarten is critical to helping students build a solid math foundation so that they can learn more complex concepts. One of the areas of number sense that is important to focus on is subitizing.

What is Subitizing?

Subitizing is the important mathematical skill of instantly being able to see "how many" without needing to count each one individually when numbers are represented by objects such as dots, tally marks, ten frames, or fingers being held up.

We do this with dice where we can just look at it quickly and we instantly know what number it represents without having to count each dot.

How Can Students Practice Subitizing?

There are many ways for students to practice subitizing, but, I have a fun way to do it with these color by number sheets. This set has a St. Patrick's Day theme, so it is perfect to use in March to practice those subitizing skills.

St. Patrick's Day Subitizing Color By Number Horseshoe

When having young students complete a color by number sheet, I often have the students color the key at the top of the page so that they can see at a glance what number goes with each color.

Because this is subitizing practice, students should be able to look at the pictures and determine the number. However, students who are still working on this skill can individually count any numbers they can't immediately recognize.

When Can I Use These St. Patrick's Day Subitizing Color By Number Sheets?

If you are using these color by number sheets in the classroom, you can use them as a math center, extra practice with a small group, sent home as extra practice, or even done as a whole group activity.

This set of subitizing color by number sheets comes with 8 different sets and answer keys, so you can actually use them in a variety of ways!

St. Patrick's Day Activities for the Classroom

With the name Kelly Malloy, you can probably tell that I have a wee bit of Irish in me (well, about 50% to be exact according to my DNA test).  But, whether you're Irish or not, bringing St. Patrick's Day activities into the classroom can be so much fun!

Here are a few St. Patrick's Day Activities for the classroom:

No Pinching

I work super hard all year to build a classroom community, so when I give my students the NO Pinching rule, they are usually pretty good about following it.  Unfortunately, kids on the playground aren't always as good about following the rule.

To avoid pinching, I get St. Patrick's Day necklaces for each of my students like these ones. This way they are all wearing green!

Read Alouds

One of the best ways to incorporate the holiday theme into the day is with a St. Patrick's Day read aloud.  Here are some of my favorite read alouds for St. Patrick's day:

Fiona's Luck tells the story of an Irish girl named Fiona who outsmarts a greedy Leprechaun King who has taken all of the good fortune of the Irish people.  I love that the main character is super smart and uses this gift to bring back luck to the Irish people.  This is a great one for teaching about character traits!

How to Catch a Leprechaun is a fun rhyming tale written in the point of view of a leprechaun.  It's great for introducing point of view!  Students will love trying to find the leprechaun on each page and trying to predict what the leprechaun will do next!

You can add to the fun by having a "leprechaun" wreak havoc in your classroom.  The best part?  You can go as all out or as little out as you like!

I personally don't love cleaning up a mess, so I do little things like printing our work on green paper, or leaving a sprinkling of shamrocks around the room.

Have your students write a how to essay about how to build a leprechaun trap.  Have them build one as a fun STEM project.

Color By Number

To celebrate St. Patrick's Day in my classroom, I like to give my students fun, no-prep St. Patrick's Day math worksheets like these color by number sheets where they can practice skills such as addition, and multiplication,  while coloring fun St. Patrick's Day themed coloring pictures!

St. Patrick's Day Word Search

Word Search activities are great for building spelling, vocabulary skills, and so much more!

St. Patrick's Day Door Decorations

Give your students a shout-out for St. Patrick's Day! This freebie is a great way to give your class shout-outs during the weeks leading up to St. Patrick’s Day. Simply print out the template on colored paper and write down the shout-outs you want to give your class. I posted one new shamrock each day and my students raced to read each new one.

This activity is featured in my blog post Shamrock Shout- out. Head on over if you want to see more about how I used it in my classroom.
