An optional video hook is also provided to set the stage to engage!

View the video hook here.

Send your students on an epic Math Quest with this exciting pirate story “Redbeard’s Rebellion”. It covers a mix of math skills, making it an excellent activity for practice and review at the end of the year. With six exciting chapters to work through, students can end up with one of four possible endings. Great activity for enrichment, early finishers, sub tub or to just add a bit of extra fun to math review time.

Available in three difficulty levels - easy, medium, and hard. Purchase levels separately or bundle and get all three for the price of two levels.
Optional Video Hook provided to introduce students to the activity. A written story is also provided in the download. Use one or the other (or both if you wish). Videohook can be viewed here.

Our next set of resources is from Angie S.

Spring Beginning Letter Clip Cards is a great activity for literacy stations or for early finishers. It allows children to engage their pre-reading skills (phonemic awareness) by identifying beginning letter sounds of various images. You can view the video here.

End the year with this great literature activity. Perfect for helping students learn about the Civil War and impact on others. This unit also comes with a fantastic project that goes with the book.

End the year with a BANG of a lesson plan! This War of 1812 unit will help you complete the Grade 2 CKLA units with a great end of the year writing activity too!

And last but not least, my resources!

Math Facts Practice Made Fun!

I am always looking for ways for my students to get more practice with their math facts. Games are the easiest way to do that - the students don't even realize they are working!

This is a version of the Kaboom game with a water balloon fight twist. Students choose a card, and get to keep it if they answer the math fact correctly. BUT... if they draw the dreaded splash card they have to put ALL of their cards back. the winner is the player with the most cards at the end of the game. Place the cards in a bucket or pail for an even more summer feel!

This game features facts up to 10 + 10 and can be played with all of the cards or just selected cards for differentiation.

Math facts made fun! Motivate your students to learn their math facts!

Want to get your students excited about learning their addition facts? Try this fun karate/martial arts incentive program with your class! I've been using this program with my students and have found it to be a very successful and motivating way for my students to learn/memorize their math facts. It only takes about 5-10 minutes a day to incorporate in your math block and your students will be begging to take timed tests each day to pass to the next level and earn their black belt in addition!
The program works with brain research and introduces only a few new facts each day. It engages both written and oral practice at school and at home. As students pass levels, they earn new colored “belts” on their way towards earning a black belt.

Now enter to win ALL of these resources AND a $50 Teachers pay Teachers gift card using the Rafflecopter below!

Teacher Appreciation Week Giveaway May 2018

In honor of Teacher Appreciation Week, some of my blogging buddies and I have gotten together to give away teaching supplies that we LOVE!  Check out all of our favorites and scroll down to enter to win ALL of them!

AND... After you enter this giveaway, check out all of our other current giveaways for additional chances to win!

Mr. Sketch Markers are my absolute favorite for making anchor charts and working with small groups!  I love the bright colors that rarely fade - and the fact that they smell good doesn't hurt either.  My students also love when I use them to grade their papers!  I buy them on Amazon using Subscribe and Save to save money!

Flair pens are another  one of my favorite markers.  I love to use them for grading and I also let students use them to revise their writing.

I do not know how I would live without my laminators.  Yes, that is plural! I have one at home and one at school and it is so convenient!

Even though I love my laminators, there are times when I need something quick and easy.  I love these dry erase pockets for being able to quickly re-use worksheets.  My students get extra practice, and I save time at the copier.

And speaking of dry erase, these are the absolute best dry erase markers out there!  My school buys a cheaper version, so I always stock up on my own, because they last so much longer! Again, I buy these on Amazon using Subscribe and Save.

Something about color makes everything better!  From boring worksheets to letters home, Astrobrights paper makes everything a little more fun!

Just like I don't like to compromise on my dry erase markers, I also don't like to compromise on the pencils we use in class.  Ticonderoga pencils are by far the best.  They sharpen so much easier than any of the others and they hold a point longer.

What teacher can't do without Teachers pay Teachers!? If you win this giveaway, you will  receive a $50 TpT gift card to spend however you like!

I love keeping all of our important dates from birthdays to assemblies on a large wall calendar that both my students and I can see.

Last but not least, sharpies always come in handy for labeling personal items, my class library books and more!

So, onto the giveaway...

Epic! App Review

Thank you to Epic! for sponsoring this post.  While this was a sponsored opportunity from Epic!, all content and opinions expressed here are my own. I only promote brands and products that I love, and we have truly loved using epic! in our classroom! I hope you enjoy today's post and discover some great ideas for using epic! in your classroom!

epic! app review

This post contains affiliate links. I earn a small commission each time someone makes a purchase using one of my links, which helps to support the blog.  All opinions are my own and I only promote brands and products that I have used myself and truly love.

A few years ago I had a student in my class who came into fourth grade as a non reader.  He barely knew his alphabet.

When I conference with my students at the beginning of the school year, I always ask them, "What kind of reader are you?"

He answered, "I'm the kind of reader who reads chapter books."  My heart broke for him knowing his current level, but I made a promise to him that he definitely would be by the end of the year.

At Christmas time we started his first "chapter books" the Fly Guy books.  By the end of the school year he was devouring the Mercy Watson series.  I had kept my promise, and I couldn't have been prouder of him!

He recently stopped by to say, "Hi!" to me, so of course I asked, "Are you still a chapter book reader?"

He said, "I don't read books anymore."  My heart sunk... then he added, "Now I read Epic!"

epic app

I had of course heard of Epic!, and had even used it a few times in my class, but his saying this made me check out the app a bit more.  I am always on the look-out for anything that will help my reluctant readers LOVE reading!

Even though the app has been on all of my students' iPads already, I hadn't really seen any of them use it.  So, I decided a mini-lesson was in order to introduce it to them. (If you haven't already signed up for Epic! you can sign-up here - it is FREE for teachers)!

epic sign-in page

When your students sign-in to your account, they will see this screen, where they can press their names to find the books they would like to read or to continue reading the books they were already reading.

Epic interests survey

They can choose interests and Epic! will suggest titles for them, or they can just search the over 25,000 titles that are available.

This student searched for Lego books (his current passion) and was able to find just the right book.

epic book search

Epic non fiction book

This student chose a chapter book series she had been reading.

Students can even listen to books.  The only thing I feel is missing with this feature is the text - students really benefit from following along with the text as they listen.  I have figured out a work around though, I started matching books from my library with the books from Epic! so they can listen to them as they read.

Some other features that I love as a teacher are the content collections, their Epic! for Educators resource page, and the parent accounts.

They have a wide selection of content collections that you can search through for various themes.  Our school uses the Lucy Calkins units of study and I have had a difficult time with the American Revolution Unit because I honestly don't have enough books in my library for it.  But, Epic! to the rescue because they have this collection ready made by another teacher, and I can even make my own.  All of my students can access these resources at the same time using Epic!

The teacher resource page includes these 10 creative ideas for using Epic! in the classroom as well as many other videos, tutorials, tips, and more.

Parents can sign-up for an account for their child to use at home.  It is only $7.99 and gives them access to over 25,000 books!  No more excuses about having nothing to read at home!  I will be sending home flyers at the end of the year to make sure that my students continue to read over the summer.  I can't wait for them to come back and visit me in a few years to tell me how excited they still are about reading because of Epic!

If you want to instantly increase your library by over 25,000 books, sign-up for Epic! now!

If you are already using Epic! in your classroom, I'd love to hear the ways you use it!  Leave a comment below so we can all benefit from your great ideas!

Thank you to Epic! for helping to make reading even more enjoyable!  You can learn more about Epic! and discover even more ideas for using it in the classroom at the Epic! Website, as well as Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, and  Twitter.
